Beautiful book! I'm trying to learn how to draw. I take trace paper and trace these images. They are detailed so a great way to gain muscle memory in my hands. An excellent book for any student or just to have on your shelf!
This is a book we had when I was growing up and I've used as inspiration and copying for art projects. Love that it has so many picture or different animals and in different environments.
This is a wonderful resource of copyright free animal imagery. I own several books of copy right free material and although there is a small bit of overlap between the books, the amount of material in this book that is not in other resource material easily makes up for it. This book does not come with high res scans on a cd like other dover or resource books so be prepared to scan (which isn't so difficult as the size of the book is pretty big and easy to get good detail). For the price and amount of material, I have not found a better book then this one.
This book is a mammoth treasury of animal and insect illustrations. It would be great for any art teacher or artist for realistic drawing examples or a starting place for fantasy creatures with realistic components. I love how many types of animals are represented. I used this book in an art class and had to have my own copy. I plan to use it in my own classes and for my own art projects. For the price it would be impossible to find a better book of illustrations.
Wow - the enormous numbers of animal life is astounding and the book clearly shows this. Unfortunately the images are quite dark and the book is very thick (you get your money's worth - image-wise), so scanning them for use in various artistic media is difficult. Therefore, I bought two of the books and plan to cut one of them up (that hurts to say for I treasure books of all types). This way I can control the scanning and modification using software to bring out details and highlight an image to my satisfaction. And finally, the classic images are impressive and I applaud the author for his selection of animals from all realms of life on earth.

This book is perfect if you are interested in Ink Art. I have not seen a book that had so many ink drawings and so fine in detail. It's a must for anyone that loves art or is an artist. The price is ridiculously too low, this book is a bargain no doubt about that. Buy it worth it worth it and you wont regret it. There are some many animals from land, air, and water. The way these artist make everything look so realistic is amazing.
I love this old book of animal illustrations and as an artist, I've used some of the images to help inspire me and understand the anatomy of various animals. I had the book a long time ago, lost it and repurchased it because I love it so much! The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the images aren't as sharp and clear as earlier editions of the book.
Slightly more than 'used' with a lower corner either chewed off or in very bad shape and taped up. Took the tape off as it was tacky. I may have paid too much but for classroom use it was worth the price and I have the solice knowing that the art students not damaging a new book when they borrow it.
